#PitchMAS Twitter Pitch Honing Workshop

Before you do ANYTHING, please read this awesome post from one of our participating agents, Julia Weber. Seriously, PLEASE READ IT.

The blog pitches have been submitted, the window has closed, and Tamara and I are busy selecting our TOP 75 pitches!
*When we finally come to an agreement--easier said than done--these TOP 75 will be posted on the  #PitchMAS blog, NOT this blog!

There have been some AMAZING pitches! But, if you don't make it to the TOP 75, and even if you do, this is only the FIRST half of #PitchMAS!

On Friday, 12/20/13, we will begin our Twitter pitch party! ANYONE can participate! It doesn't matter if you've made our TOP 75 blog pitches (or not), or even if you submitted a blog pitch (or not). We urge EVERYONE to participate in the Twitter pitch party as well because we've been known to attract a few ninja agents and editors in the past!
*The ONLY stipulation is that your pitch must be for a completed manuscript only. Also, please keep your Twitter pitching to no more than two times per hour, per manuscript.

I'm assuming you participated in our awesome pitch-honing workshop HERE, and received a ton of feedback from your peers. You did do that, right? RIGHT?

No? Well you're in luck!

And even if you did participate, I know that we can still question ourselves like crazy--we're writers, duh--so if you'd like a bit more help/feedback on your 140-character or less TWITTER PITCH, I'm opening my personal blog for this purpose.

Twitter pitches MUST include the hashtag, #PitchMAS, or agents/editors won't see the tweet.

I also highly recommend squeezing in category/genre IF POSSIBLE.

Please post your pitch in the comments below and start helping one another hone those bad boys!

Example of a Twitter pitch:

20yo Analisa has 40 days & 40 nights to change her fate aboard the Ark of Dreams, or risk being forced to repopulate new world.  NA

(PS. You may never actually ADORE your Twitter pitch, but we do want you to at least like it. A little.)

Happy Release Day to Rick Chiantaretto! DEATH OF THE BODY is out now!

Today is the release day of Death of the Body by Rick Chiantaretto!

Title:  Death of the Body (Crossing Death #1)

Author:  Rick Chiantaretto

Genre: New Adult Urban Fantasy

I grew up in a world of magic. By the time I was ten I understood nature, talked to the trees, and listened to the wind. When the kingdom of men conquered my town, I was murdered by one of my own—the betrayer of my kind. But I didn't stay dead.

I woke to find myself in a strange new world called Los Angeles. The only keys to the life I remembered were my father’s ring, my unique abilities, and the onslaught of demons that seemed hell-bent on finding me. Now I must learn who I really am, protect my friends, get the girl, and find my way back to my beloved hometown of Orenda.

About Rick Chiantaretto

I’ve often been accused of having done more in my life than the average 30 year old, but if I were completely honest I’d have to tell you my secret: I’m really 392.

So after all this time, I’m a pretty crappy writer.

I have one book published but out of print, one coming out soon, and a bunch half written (when you have eternity, where’s the reason to rush?). I’ve been favorably reviewed by horror greats like Nancy Kilpatrick, and my how-to-write-horror articles have been quoted in scholarly (aka community college freshmen’s) papers.

I enjoy the occasional Bloody Mary, although a Bloody Kathy or Susan will suffice.

Mostly, I just try to keep a low profile so people don’t figure out who I REALLY am.

When Anna Meyer’s purchases the home that her late mother grew up in, she’s determined to prove her independence to herself and to her well-meaning father and brother. She’s been lovingly sheltered and protected for all of her 26 years but now she just wants to live her life- on her own terms.

Sam Gardner hadn’t given much thought to who would move next door to his small Angel’s Lake bungalow. Once his neighbor arrived however, he could think of nothing and no one else. When Anna makes it clear that she’s not interested in having a man around, he invents a girlfriend to put her at ease.

Thinking that Sam has a girlfriend makes it easier for Anna to be herself and open the door to friendship. He frustrates her, makes her laugh, and challenges her but he never tries to step on her independence. The more time they spend together, the more she realizes that whoever has Sam’s heart is a lucky girl.

The only girl that has Sam’s heart is Anna but there’s no way he can tell her this when he started this friendship on a lie. Things take a turn for the worse when Anna mistakes a nightmare client as Sam’s fiancée.

Anna came to Minnesota to fight for her independence but she ends up fighting for much more.

She laughed it off easily, like she did most things. She was the only woman he knew that didn’t fret about her appearance. Not in the morning when he woke up to her, as he’d had the pleasure of doing for the last few days, or when she noticed she wore mismatched socks, or didn’t have make-up on. Along with being sexy, sweet, and determined, she had a graceful self-confidence that knocked him flat. She turned in his arms and pressed her lips to his again, taking her time.
“You hungry?” she asked, backing up to clean up her mess.
“Mmhmm,” he replied, moving closer again to nuzzle her neck. She laughed.
“I didn’t mean that. I was going to make some pasta,” she replied, tipping her neck so he could press kisses along her shoulder.
“Well, actually,” he replied, turning her to face him again, “my mom is having this open house thing that she does every year. I don’t usually go but Melissa…let’s just say my mom would really like me to come. With you.”
Her face brightened like he’d bestowed jewelry at her feet and he had to wonder if he hadn’t described his family well enough.
“Do you want me to go with you?” she asked, taking her flour covered apron off to reveal a blue and white t-shirt that read “I got Smurfed” and had a picture of the Smurfette character he remembered from childhood. His eyes found hers again.
“Anna, I don’t just want you to go with me. I don’t want to go without you. I’m finding I feel that way about more and more things lately,” he replied, reaching out to push her hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear. She had flour on her cheek too that he wiped off with a smile. The smile on her face was stealing his breath and making his eyes burn.
“Sam,” she whispered, her hand coming up to grasp his wrist. The emotion in her eyes just about choked him. He hadn’t found one moment in the last four days that he could look into those eyes and tell her what an idiot she’d fallen for; it would break her heart and he couldn’t.
He kissed her to stop her from saying anything more. He tried to lighten the mood and the intensity that was always present between them.
“You should probably change your shirt. Unless you want to tell my mom what it means,” he smiled. She smiled back but her eyes were wet. Another twist on his heart. He could see everything she felt in her eyes. They were as expressive and unguarded as the rest of her and he wanted so badly to tell her he felt the same but until he’d told her the truth, he wouldn’t. After Christmas. He kissed her again, harder, distracting them both but not enough to make him forget that he didn’t deserve her love.

Livvie seeks refuge in the art room and finds Bianca, the school ‘freak’.  Free-spirited and confident, Bianca is everything Livvie isn’t. Shaken by her mom’s desperation, her sister’s deteriorating condition, and abandoned by her friends, Livvie finds comfort and an attraction she never felt before with Bianca.

If Livvie defies them and goes, she risks expulsion and further ridicule from her classmates. At home, her mother’s behavior escalates to new levels of crazy and Jules is begging for help to end the pain once and for all.

Zombies aren’t mindless anymore. @DefinitionHouse's Kickstarter campaign for #DeadNewWorld by @J_Ryan is live! #indie

Dead New World by Ryan Hill

Zombies aren’t mindless anymore.

They follow orders. And if Holt and Ambrose want to kill some undead, they’ll do the same. But when a routine mission goes horribly wrong, the best friends’ lives are flayed to the bone.

Now there’s only one light in the darkness of Holt’s life, and when she’s taken, he’ll do anything to get her back. Even if that means defying orders and using his best friend as a weapon. Holt and Ambrose risk all to save her, but what they discover among the hordes threatens to remake humanity. Again.

In the end, will there be anything left to live for in this dead new world?

The Campaign:
The Kickstarter campaign is live! It’ll run from November 14 to December 14, and we are so excited! We believe that by using crowd-sourcing we will be able to generate buzz and interact with readers even before the book is published. It also brings authors and readers together so that they are both part of the publication journey. And as the publisher, we look forward to strengthening that bond. We’ve chosen Ryan Hill’s Dead New World as our first project and are looking forward to sharing it with you. Thank you for spreading the word. Now let’s make beautiful zombies together!

Ryan Hill’s bio:
Ryan Hill likes to keep zombies in a safe place—his head. If zombies ever do take over, the thought of living off canned beans is not enticing. At all.
Ryan uses a healthy dose of real life and imagination to come up with stories, and typically spends his time, reading, writing, and watching movies or TV shows...anything involving a good story. Drop him a line on Twitter @J_Ryan.

Want to help me name my next book?! (Pretty please?) #wip #amwriting

Want to help me name my next book?

 I'd love your input!

[UNTITLED] is a new adult contemporary romance about a woman who returns home after seven years away, taking employment at the high school where she met her first love, then discovering said first love is still there . . . coaching the swim team.

Here's a rough blurb:

Second chances mean diddly-squat to twenty-six-year-old Sage Shepard; she's never needed one and has yet to meet anyone who deserves the opportunity to wrong her twice. After years of therapy helped her overcome her traumatic childhood, Sage returns to her hometown to make good on a promise she made her brother years ago. Taking a job as the school nurse at Lorimar High pushes memories of her abuse to the surface, but if it means finally having the means and ability to care for Jimmy, she'll stop at nothing. After all, she's not that broken little foster kid anymore.

Brandon "Tig" Tiggs feels like he hasn't left Lorimar High since the day he graduated. After a car accident destroyed his knee and robbed him of his chances of swimming in the Olympics, Tig resigned to coaching the team of his Alma-mater instead of leading the town to glory. He's spent the past eight years pretending to be in love with a woman who resents him for never getting out, coaching a team of swimmers who have no intention of obtaining excellence, and surviving a dreary life he never pictured for himself. Going through the motions has become Tig’s monotonous reality.

When Sage returns to Lorimar High, walking back into Tig’s dreary life, memories of their secret four-year relationship come flooding back to the surface. Their passionate, all-consuming love sparks once more, threatening to undo them, and it’s all either of them can do to stay away from one another.

Will past betrayals and current mistakes ruin their second chance, or will this rebel-punk foster kid and her golden boy swim champ reignite the love of a lifetime?

To thank you for your help, I'm having a giveaway! Just comment below with your title suggestions (mandatory for giveaway), then enter the Rafflecopter for a chance to win copies of the first two books of The Ever Trilogy!

Ideally, I will pick one of your awesome suggestions and we will all ride off into the sunset together (in this case, I will also thank you in the acknowledgements of the book), but as this book is still a work in progress, my literary agent and/or a publishing house may veto any name we choose.

Tour Stop! PARAWARS: UPRISING by Caitlin Greer *Excerpt! Review! Awesomeness!*

By Caitlin Greer
Book One of the ParaWars Trilogy

The Paranormal Uprising brought myth and legend out of the shadows and into real life. The war that followed tore the world apart. Two years after the Uprising, twenty-year-old Kendry is learning the hard way that the battle lines aren’t as clear-cut as human versus para. And the hard way means being hunted down by both human militants and para separatists. Trouble is, she has no idea why.

On the run with only her mysterious gargoyle guardian, Kendry knows that finding out why she’s on everyone’s most-wanted list will be no easy task. It means charging headlong into a war she’d hoped to avoid, and is woefully unprepared for. So when she realizes that everyone in her life has been lying to her, discovering that she’s somehow the key to ending the war is the last thing she needs. With both sides tearing up the world to find her, it’s decision time for Kendry—keep running, or stand up and fight.

My Thoughts:
I have now read two books by Caitlin Greer--ParaWars: UPRISING and EYRE HOUSE--and I can say without doubt that I'm a HUGE fan of Caitlin's writing. Her voice is strong and well-formed, and I'm a forever fan. Stellar storytelling skills aside, Cait is an amazing and supportive member of our little writing community. I highly suggest grabbing a copy of every book she writes. She can't fail.

Now, what can I say about ParaWars: UPRISING . . . first of all, MORE. I need more Axel like yesterday! Please hurry up with Book 2, Cait, and if you need a beta reader, I'll humbly volunteer. In other words, GIMME!

This story took off in a flash and never slowed down. Though the romance aspect was strong--and O.M.G. the freaking sexual chemistry!--the romance was not the driving force of the story. The action was. ParaWars: UPRISING moves along at a wonderfully quick pace, never slowing down to lose the reader, and the adventure combined with the steamy romantic tension make for a truly exciting read.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Well, everyone over 18, that is, because holy sex scenes, Batman!

P.S. I LOVE YOU, AXEL. *pushes all other book boyfriends aside*

Axel tackles me as the jubjub lunges. We hit the stone with my ears still ringing, and the whole rampart shakes. He pauses long enough to make sure I’m okay, and then he’s up, dodging the jubjub’s slashing beak. The thing is enormous. I can’t tell what color it is, because it shifts, blending in and out of the fading daylight. I can’t really even get a good look at it, which is weird, because I can’t take my eyes off it.

Axel finds an opening, and dives. His fists batter the giant bird’s head. He seems immune to its shriek, which has me paralyzed. I keep trying to shake it off, with no luck.

The jubjub manages to escape Axel’s hold, throwing him off into the air. My hand finds the trigger of my 9mm as its eyes center on me again, its mouth opening for another shriek. I manage to let off a few shots before it deafens me again, but they only seem to make it angry. And then Axel is back, pounding on the back of its head, twisting at it.

Shrieking in rage, the jubjub bird throws its wings left and right, around, over, and into me. Claws dig into the ramparts, crowding me almost out of room, and options are few. Against the wall seems better than the open air, but end up trapped, unable to escape the flailing wings. Turns out its feathers are as sharp as the beak and claws.

The pain is good, though. It breaks the siren spell of fear and anxiety projected by the jubjub’s shrill cries. It wakes me up.

Two things come into sharp focus. The bird’s not going down, even as strong as Axel is. And the sun is about to disappear, which means Axel is about to become a lot more vulnerable, thanks to the already risen moon. The jubjub’s sharp feathers and talons and beak will shred his flesh faster than a blender.

The jubjub screams again as it catches sight of me. It lunges forward, blade-like beak snapping at me. The stone below me is guaranteed to bruise later, but it’s far preferable to losing an arm, or even my head. The small parapet becomes a lot smaller as the jubjub stabs its beak after me again and again. I roll around, desperate to avoid it, while the sun creeps lower and lower. The moon’s already high. Time is running out.

Axel’s voice cuts through the jubjub’s noise, rising in his own scream. I look up at him, arms wrapped around the bird’s razor-feathered neck, the stone muscles in his arms and neck bulging, wings fully extended and beating hard as he drags the head away from me.

“Dammit, Kendry, shoot it!”

Where the hell is my rifle?

Author Bio:

Cait writes YA and NA stories that range from sci-fi and fantasy (because she loves making worlds and things up), to contemporary (because she kind of sort of fell into it and discovered she’s not half bad). Her best friends growing up were the combined works of Robin McKinley, Madeline L'Engle, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, and too many others to mention.

She drives a Jeep, loves the outdoors, takes pictures of everything she can, and writes obsessively. A martial artist and a former teacher, Cait is owned by two cats who started out incredibly small, and are now incredibly huge.

She currently live in Utah, but Virginia will always be home.

You will not be disappointed! (You'll need to grab EYRE HOUSE too because of the awesomeness of that story. Just trust me on that.)
